After nearly 20 years together, Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez were a couple on and off. But after she met Ben Affleck at the Met Gala in 2016, the two were inseparable and Rodriguez was left disappointed, not knowing that Affleck already had a girlfriend. After nearly two years of him and JLo still being together, the 41-year-old New York Times best-selling author talked about their romance as an example of how a relationship can run its course, but he said he has no regrets and is still in love with his former wife and mother of his children, Jennifer Lopez.
Rodriguez appeared at the Business of Fashion Summit at Columbia University in New York City on Monday, and opened up about his relationship with Lopez. He revealed he has “obsessive-compulsive compulsive disorder,” also called OCD, a condition he said he got into when he was about 9 years old.
“When I was 9 years old, I wrote a note to my sister saying I was going to kill her and was going to kill myself,” Rodriguez said. “And I was ashamed of it. … My favorite hobby back then was playing basketball. I played like 50 games a week. My [adolescent] self would ask me, ‘How come you’re not playing. I’m going to play right now.’ And I’d say, ‘Well, I need a nap.’”
“I get obsessed with something like eating but I know it’s a fantasy,” he added. “For me, it was just a fascination with healthy eating and I worked out a lot. And I’m going to give you tips so you can do it.”
But Rodriguez has suffered setbacks, too. He revealed that when he first met Lopez 20 years ago, she told him that they both wanted to be successful, he could not believe how inspiring her words were. He recalled spending hours with her when she was in the studio recording her hit song “Jenny from the Block,” but that she was no longer thrilled by the idea of working with him. He said when she told him at the Met Gala that she was about to meet Affleck, the worst was yet to come.
“That made me my worst nightmare,” he said. “That night was my worst nightmare. They got into a fight and she left. It was her ‘Jenny from the block,’ she wrote that song about the people from the block, and then she was leaving town.”
When Affleck and Lopez dated, Rodriguez said he fell for the “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” singer but “they both had something,” he said. “She had a persona. He had a persona and you’re going to go through that awkward stage where you’re like, ‘You know what? This is what we have. I don’t want this part. You don’t want that part.’ So we had different roles on the field. I don’t know how they communicated, but we had some pretty good moments.”
Rodriguez has been married for 11 years to actress Cynthia Scurtis, but he said he has a lot of love for Lopez because she has always been with him “through thick and thin,” including when things weren’t going well at home. “And I’m talking about my marriage now,” he said. “We had our very interesting relationship, we had our ups and downs, but we had real feelings for each other. And it hurt me to see her go through what she was going through in her marriage. The only thing I thought about was, ‘Is it okay? If something was going on, this could hurt my career, right?’ It was hurtful to see her go through that.”
Rodriguez admitted he will never totally be over Lopez, and that even though they have been separated for two years, “we still talk every day. I’m just an addict and I have a hard time saying no. I’m just obsessed.”
Rodriguez added, “Sometimes people go over the rainbow but sometimes it just falls off a cliff.”
