The relatives of Gabby Petito were at her funeral on Saturday.
Her body has never been found, but police have not ruled out the possibility she is still alive.
The ex-partner of Gabby’s mother is in custody but his former partner was not there. Police say they do not think it would be in the best interests of her to attend the funeral.
Brian Laundrie is still on bail awaiting trial over accusations that he supplied the drugs that killed the loved one.
His lawyer has told the Guardian there is a “lot of good in the evidence against him” and the case against him was “weak”.
The minister of police and justice, Alastair Carmichael, said “The responsible thing to do at this point in time is wait for the police in respect of whether we can discuss details of the investigation.
“However, it’s a matter of public record that an investigation is ongoing.
“I know that in terms of the family’s loved one, there are some unanswered questions – some questions that are relevant to them and some questions that are difficult to answer.
“We are continuing to support them through that process. We hope that’s obviously very healing for the family.
“At this stage, although I have no powers to discuss the circumstances of an ongoing investigation, I can say that we are pursuing every available avenue in this investigation and every legal avenue to bring that person who is responsible to justice.”
