Fourteen years after the release of “Skyrim” — itself a gargantuan endeavor — Bethesda Softworks is once again reviving this wonderland. But just like for every anniversary release of a high-profile series, naysayers are popping up. From a lack of great gaming controllers to an explosion of new 3D retellings of the same story, Skyrim has been the darlings of the “d&D” world for nearly a decade. But along with a flurry of self-referential spinoffs, Bethesda is also bringing that wonder back to the living. And who better to help illuminate the game’s manifold delights than Geoff Keighley, the guy who you wouldn’t want to cross off your list of favorite YouTube personalities and who would never hesitate to squeeze Inigo Montoya (perhaps in the same set) into an interview.
Keighley and his team of YouTube and podcast hosts were hard at work at Bethesda’s E3 press conference last June, preparing for this coming September’s affair in Los Angeles, when the producer reeled in the camera for a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into an industry event. While he’s (relatively) close to closing in on his 10-year mark as a regular correspondent, it’s hard to believe that Keighley hasn’t been keeping up with the rapid advances in consumer technology. With just one click of the mouse, we could have captured a look at the new Dire Wraith dragon, or Keighley’s charming “guess the number of people in this room and the number that identified as becoming a player” segment.
The following interview features no confessions of overly watching Netflix movies or fiddling with my Apple TV, and Keighley will have me worryingly (and unfairly) ahead of the curve. Instead, he’s interested in more in-depth tactical discussions of the universe that’s given rise to the name he’s known for.
