The Secretary-General welcomes the nomination of the African Dane of the Civil Society Democratic Movement Africa C.D.C., Dr. John Nkengasong, as the United Nations program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) Vice-President for Technical Oversight and Member –General of the International AIDS Society (IAS).
Mr. Nkengasong has played a leading role in the global effort to stem the HIV epidemic. He currently serves as the UNAIDS Director for Eastern and Southern Africa Region. He also heads the country programme for UNAIDS for the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He is the Coordinator of the Khosïr–Solta/Congo African Disaster Risk Reduction Programme (ACRR). Prior to this he was the Deputy Director of the UNAIDS Regional Programme for Eastern and Southern Africa, a position he has held since 2016.
Before joining UNAIDS, Dr. Nkengasong was a programme manager of the Aids response in Zimbabwe, where he was responsible for training and strengthening health systems and for policy coordination for health care organisations and organizations in health systems. He has also worked with UNAIDS in the Aids Response in Lesotho, South Africa and Malawi. From 2009-2013, he was the President of Kano Aids Care Network for Aids Organizations in Nigeria.
Mr. Nkengasong was born in Mount Elgon in Kenya. He earned his PhD in Community Health and Population in 1984 from the University of Maryland, Baltimore.
